Recreate an American Classic with the Brownells M16A1 Handguard Set, built to accurately replicate the original handguards issued to thousands of American servicemen & women. This Handguard Set is modeled directly off of original handguards, which are becoming increasingly difficult to find, or in decent condition. Left and Right Handguard halves include aluminum heatshields, protecting your hand and the handguards from barrel heat. Combine the Handguard Set with the matching Pistol Grip & Buttstock Assembly from Brownells, and you have a new condition furniture set for your AR-15, M16, M16A1 or other early model rifle. Handguards include instructions and heatshields. Available in several different colors including: Black - Proper for Model 602, XM16E1, M16A1 & later generation rifles introduced after 1963 Green - Proper for early Model 601 rifles, the first AR-15 adopted by the US Air Force in 1959 Brown - Similar to the earliest AR-15 Prototype rifle furniture used in the late 1950s Retro furniture from Brownells is not an exact copy of original components or their construction. Nice retro handguard set (23.9.2017)

Well made and solid fit. They are a lighter green than olive drab. Had to clean up some flash from the edges but fit well. If you are building a retro rifle you will want to use the whole set to have the color match. Heat shields are mounted solid and these handguard are a tight fit. Pic will show the color difference.

Retro M16 handguard (27.9.2017)

So... it's Great to have a retro option to make your AR look more like the venerable M-16. I bought the whole set. Wish I would only bought the hand guard. The parts are fine and fit well on the rifle...but, the plastic is considerably lighter in weight and strength when compared to the Colt furniture I had. The hand guard does work, but had significant burrs underneath from being cut off the molding rack. It required considerable sanding to get smooth. The stock is lighter than the Colt furniture and about 3/4 inch shorter which will affect your LOP. Overall, nice option to have, wish the plastic and molding on the set were a bit better. I wound up only using the hand guard as the grip and butt stock were just too lightweight for my taste.

Good as the originals (1.10.2017)

I have several sets of originals on retro builds and extras in storage, excellent to NOS. Brownells has really stepped up with these retro pieces. Impossible to tell the difference from the originals. I only wish they had the M16A1 stock as well.

Triangular handguards (11.10.2017)

Repo handguards, these are repo. Finish is a flat black not more of a satin. Heat shield is very shiny, well they are new not 50 years old like my original sets, duh! That said the aluminum doesn't have the detailed stamping or cut outs like originals but you can hardly see it when installed. Molding flash on the ones I got wasn't bad at all, easy to clean up the little that was there. The profile on the rear was smaller than originals. The original ones will be more proud so mixing new with old will be noticable.

All said, these are repo! They look great. They fit great. They give the look and feel they are made for. For what little they cost these are excellent. These will definitely be on my work horse rifle so I don't destroy expensive originals. If you are realistic these are a no brainier. If you are building a repo rifle these are the ticket. With repo NoDak lowers, correct port doors and other hard to get originals the rifle won't be original so why spend the time and money on originals, unless you have it. Very happy and will get a couple more as backup just in case.

Excellent purchase. On the rifle you cant tell the difference bwteewn these and actual Colt. Only difference is in the wallet.

Disappointed (20.1.2018)

I so wanted to add A1 handguards to my AR but the orginal parts were old and in poor condition so I jumped at the opportunity to purchase a newly manufactured set from Brownells. They look great, they feel great, but the plastic is much thinner than I expected and I can't imagine that this handguard will hold up under adverse conditions. How much could it possibly cost to beef up the plastic, especially around the holes? Perhaps this item is only for collectors.

Retro Handguards (19.2.2018)

I got these to replace a set of real ones on an A2 HBAR build. Be aware that the heat shields in these have a much smaller diameter at the front than the gennies do. They actually make light contact with the barrel which is 7/8" in my case. These are actually a little lighter than originals and don't feel quite as ridged. Won't pair up with them either. If these get broken tho, they can be replaced for much less, and much easier than real ones. Would give these 5 stars except for the heat shield issue.

Handguard fitment (13.3.2018)

Bought an Delton A2 upper with carry handle, has a heavy barrel, this handguard fit perfectly with no mods. Had asked Brownells if it would fit a heavy barrel but the response was no, only I had it on for months before their response.

Then again, I didn't specify that I was putting on that particular upper.

Looks great for that earlier A1 look.

This thing is sharp,the edges don't line up and there is a gap down the middle where the two sides meet. The plastic is thin and cheap seems fragile. Good idea but poorly done.
